Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus : Short Summary
The tragic story of the life and death of Doctor Faust, commonly known simply as Doctor Faust, is an Elizabethan tragedy by Christopher Marlowe, based on German stories about the main character Faust.
The Major Characters:
- Doctor Faustus – The Tragic hero.
- Mephistophilis – The Devil conductor to show the way of the damnation to Dr. Faustus.
- Lucifer – The Leading Devil of the hell with whom Dr. Faustus made contract of damnation at the cost of his blood.
- Valdes & Cornelius – The two devil teachers of Dr. Faustus who gave him the information and led him to the utter damnation.
- Wagner – The servant of Dr. Faustus.
The Story of Dr. Faustus:
Because of his unlimited knowledge, Faustus was called Doctor Faustus. Being proud of his power with knowledge, he accompanied by Devil and so finally he fell down.
Doctor Faustus acquired almost all branches of knowledge and even he acquired the knowledge. Then necromancy of the magic attracted him and he wanted to learn the magic power, he accused religion, Christ and God.
Because of his deadly sin and Devil path, Good Angel tired to lead Doctor Faustus to the right path. But he did not listen to that. Rather at the advice of the Devil, he listened to the Evil Angel. He wished to acquire black art. But the associated scholars lamented for his misdeeds to prevent him from doing that.
Doctor Faustus then invited the Devil Angel. Mephistophilis to guide him to the black art. Mephistophilis explained to him as he wished. Because of his having cursed Christ and Religion, Doctor Faustus was going to be doomed gradually. But he never realized his wrong deeds. The he even made contract in his own blood with the leading Devil Angel and sold his soul to Lucifer.
While the Good Angel again advice him to return to the right path. But he never returned. Rather he signed the act of his contract with Lucifer under certain conditions which he was to follow for Hell. Because of his vicious deeds death was approaching him. But never he realized his doom. While an old man advice him to the right path, which he also refused. Here Mephistophilis warned him to break the contract with Lucifer. Doctor Faustus lastly asked Mephistophilis to bring Helen To Troy to entertain him during the final days of his life.
Of course, Doctor Faustus lastly wished to believe in religion, God and Christ. But the time was gone. And he had to die a miserable death. This is the sad doom of the great learned hero for his unlimited ambition of knowledge, power and evil deeds.
