 The Duchess of Malfoy is a tragedy of Jacobian revenge, written by English playwright John Webster 1612–1613.

The Story of the Play “The Duchess of Malfi”

The Duchess who first married at the age of 12 and she lost her husband at the age of 20. Her two brothers, Ferdinand and Cardinal tried to prevent her from remarriage. But the Duchess fell in love with her Steward, Antonio and secretly married him and disclosed the matter only to her maid servant, Cariola.

Antonio however, disclosed the matter of his marriage with the Duchess, to his friend, Delio. By this time the Duchess give birth a male child but did not disclosed the matter. When Bosola being appointed a spy on the Duchess to watch her, understood that the Duchess secretly married Antonio after her 2nd delivery of the child. Being aware of the fact of her marriage with Antonio, Ferdinand decided to kill the Duchess. By this time the 3rd child, a daughter was board of Duchess.

Then Duchess was ready to disclose the matter of her marriage to her two brothers. Being aware of the fact of her brother’s plan to kill her husband, the Duchess sent Antonio to Ancona (a place away from Malfi) with her two sons. Then Duchess with pretense (fun) of pilgrimage went to Ancona. A killer appointed by her brothers killed the Duchesss by strangling. Bosola knowing his own mistake of spying decided to kill Ferdinand and finally he killed Ferdinand. However, at the end, Delio was found with the eldest son of the Duchess in the last scene of the play.
